Course Overview:

The Michigan Alliance of School Physical and Occupational Therapists (MASPOT) is hosting sensory processing specialist Diana Henry at their 2008 MASPOT Conference. On October 16th, Ms. Henry will present “Tools for Tots,” on October 17th “Tools for Teens” and on October 18th “Sensory Processing Measure.” MASPOT invites all professionals and parents of children with sensory processing disorders to attend these informative and engaging workshops. Participants may register for any or all days.

Learning Objectives

SENSORY TOOLS FOR TOTS - October 16  

  • Explore the question “Is it behavior or is there a sensory challenge driving the behavior?” by learning about their own sensory preferences.
  • Discover how sensations, sensory integration and sensory processing impact behavior by addressing the challenges seen with daily activities and skills specific to tots.
  • Learn how to integrate practical sensory strategies at home, in the community and at school by using together the Tools for Tots: Sensory Strategies for Toddlers and PreschoolersTM book.
  • Be encouraged to implement a ‘systems change’ including the designing of sensory safe spaces for tots in their homes and communities.

SENSORY TOOLS FOR PRE-TEENS AND TEENS - October 17
  • Learn about the teen brain and why teens may make irresponsible choices and why some teens seek the “sensory high” obtained from thrill seeking behaviors, including drugs
  • Review the teen survey and discuss how teen sensory preferences challenge their occupational performance in school and at home
    Discuss the “Disconnect” and “Digital” kids
  • Describe critical aspects of the teen brain and sleep
  • Discuss how to design sensory safe spaces for teens
  • Identify alternative healthy and age appropriate sensory strategies and “tools” to assist teens to participate in age appropriate activities

SENSORY PROCESSING MEASURE - October 18
 

  • Review of the research behind the development of this norm referenced standardized assessment tool
  • Discuss principles of use to support identifying and treating sensory integration/processing difficulties, including praxis/motor planning
  • Administer and score the SPM
  • Discuss case studies using the SPM
  • Use the SPM in multiple environments, encouraging collaboration among parents, schools and clinics/therapists
  • Answer the question, “Are sensory issues driving the behavior?”

PRESENTER

Diana Henry, MS, OTR/L president of Henry Occupational Therapy Services, Inc., studied with Lorna Jean King beginning in 1975, and then together founded what is now called the Children’s Center in Arizona. Diana opened her clinic specializing in sensory integration (SI) in 1984 and developed programs for various Arizona schools. In 2000, Diana was nominated to be on the Advisory Board of the Non Verbal Learning Disability Association (NLDA). Diana currently sits on the Professional Advisory Board of Developmental Delay Resources. As the Communication Liaison for the American Occupational Therapy Association SI Special Interest Section (2005-2008), Diana provides a bridge between communities and AOTA. Diana is SCSIT and SIPT certified. She received her B.S. in OT from Tufts University, and her M.S. in sensory integration from Rush University. Diana has taught at Arizona State University, nationally to school districts, associations/clinics and internationally in Canada, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Brazil, Scotland and Ireland.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Early Intervention Specialists, Educators, Social Workers, Psychologists, Classroom support staff, School Administrators, and Parents/Caregivers.

CONTINUED EDUCATION

Certificates of Attendance will be issued to all participants at the completion of each day of the conference. Participants are required to attend the entire program and complete a seminar evaluation. Amended certificates with the correct time attended will be issued if you are unable to attend the entire program.

Occupational Therapists: OPL is approved by the AOTA to provide continuing education. Day 1 and Day 2 each offer .6 AOTA CEUs and Day 3 offers .5 AOTA CEUs. AOTA CE Provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures by AOTA.
